Outdoor Space... Your Personal Haven

Now more than ever, outdoor space is a coveted amenity—and likely at the top of the must-have list for anyone searching for their next home. I wanted to share these tips for enhancing a terrace, garden or rooftop.

Creating Your Own Outdoor Oasis

Whether you have a backyard, patio or even a small balcony, try these tips to turn your outdoor space into your own personal haven.

Pick a Theme

To best reflect your style, pick a theme and run with it. If you’re dreaming of peaceful sanctuary, a Japanese garden could be a perfect fit. Create privacy with a bamboo fence and add mosses, a stone footpath and a fountain for instant tranquility.

Choose the Right Plants and Foliage

Make sure you’re purchasing plants that make sense for your landscape. If there’s no shady areas, get plants that thrive in 100% sunlight. If you’re not up for consistent watering and care, opt for lower maintenance options. And whatever you choose, be sure you know the maturation size: what looks small and manageable at first might end up outgrowing your space.

Keep It Cozy

Furnish your outdoor space as you would an interior room, considering your style and how you will be using the space. If you have a family or like to entertain, make sure there is an appropriate amount of seating positioned wisely to keep the conversation flowing. If you prefer to curl up alone with a cup of coffee and a book, one comfortable chair with a small table will do the trick.

Don’t Forget About Lighting

If you’ll be using your oasis in the evenings, lighting can help to set the mood. Twinkling lights and candles are great for intimate get-togethers, while large bulbs and lanterns are more appropriate for entertaining with larger groups.

Accessorize and Decorate

Once you’ve set the foundation, then the fun begins… Add colorful cushions and decorative planters, an outdoor bar or a fire pit to put the finishing personal touches on your new favorite space.
